10 Tips to Help You Avoid the Coronavirus and Influenza

Avoid colds and strengthen your immune system by adding flavonoids to your diet. A recent study demonstrated that those who ate a daily helping of apples, blueberries, citrus, onions, or romaine lettuce decreased their potential to become sick by one third. Make up a big fruit salad once or twice a week and you’re ready to enjoy anytime.  Splash in a tablespoon of lemon or lime juice to keep the fruit from turning brown.

It’s best to make these fresh right before drinking. However, they keep in the fridge for two or three days. Take a juice drink to work with you in a thermos to sip throughout the morning.

Your grandmother was on to something when she placed that mustard plaster on your chest to ease the congestion of the flu or a cold. Avoid the mess but still reap the benefits by sipping a cup of mustard tea. Place one teaspoon of crushed mustard seeds in boiling water. Crush the seeds in a glass or metal bowl, plastic isn’t hard enough. Mustard powder is also available in the spice section of the grocery store. Let steep 15 minutes then strain. Add honey or your favorite sweetener.

Got a headache? Head to the nearest rosemary bush. Pour two cups of boiling water over 1/2 cup of dried rosemary or 1 cup of fresh rosemary leaves. Let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain and add to a hot bath. Relax for 20 minutes.  If you don’t have rosemary herbs use rosemary essential oil instead. Four or five drops should do it.

Sesame oil soothes aching joints. Gently massage 1/8 teaspoon of the oil into your painful joints. After 8 weeks pain should significantly decrease.  Don’t use the toasted sesame oil in the Asian section of the grocery store. It has a very strong scent. Find regular sesame oil with the cooking oils.

Cole and flu virus survive on human skin for three hours. Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer during flu season. Germs can transfer from your hands to the handle of a grocery cart for example. Take advantage of the sanitizing wipes offered by many stores.

Zinc lozenges work to suppress coughs as well as sooth irritated throats. The zinc boosts the virus zapping immune cells.

Got a cough that just won’t go away at night? Pop a square of dark chocolate in your mouth and let it slowly dissolve.

Chicken soup really does make a cold feel better. Spicy chilies help thin mucous to decongest a stuffy nose. So why not combine the two? Add a sprinkle of red pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce to your favorite chicken soup recipe or even canned chicken soup.
